£50k for 50 years Appeal – Supporting young people like Toko in palliative care

Toko is receiving palliative care and depends on Inter Care’s support

Toko has received a diagnosis of Kaposi’s Sarcoma, a form of skin cancer, along with HIV. He was referred to Ndi Moyo, the Palliative Care Trust (partner of Inter Care), by the district hospital. Toko’s parents and siblings, explored various facilities to find appropriate care for him; unfortunately, these places had limited resources, providing only temporary treatment. This lack of consistent care led to the development of a serious wound on the lower part of his leg, causing Toko to isolate himself due to the unpleasant odor.

Toko’s leg became significantly swollen which led to him leaving his job as a baker due to challenges with walking. Before visiting Ndi Moyo, his family assisted him with bathing and helped him move around. Because he has stopped working, Toko is struggling to support himself financially, and his parents, who live in poverty, cannot provide him with the basic necessities he needs.

Toko is currently receiving excellent care at the Palliative Care Trust, where his wounds are dressed daily, and he is prescribed Amoxicillin along with other antibiotics to treat the infected wound. This young man is undergoing chemotherapy, and the donations of medications and dressings from Inter Care will greatly aid him on his hopeful journey to recovery.

Toko expressed deep gratitude for the donated medicines, stating that this support has restored “a sense of worthiness” for him and his family. His nurse commented, “We feel incredibly fortunate to be one of the beneficiary organizations receiving this support from Inter Care. Our efforts are significantly enhanced when medication becomes available. It is truly heartbreaking for healthcare providers to be unable to alleviate the pain and symptoms of patients with chronic conditions due to a lack of medicines.”

Supporting Toko and others like him
