Alan Mellor

FBIM, M Ch, Inst M (Chair)

Alan graduated in business management and is a Fellow of the British Institute of Management. His career was spent in senior management roles in multinational companies, working in the UK, Europe, USA, Middle East, and Africa. Alan resided for two years in Kenya, travelling extensively in East Africa. During this period, he developed a keen interest in the opportunities and challenges facing African countries. He has been an Inter Care trustee since 2004 and Chair since 2009, using his business background to help define and pursue Inter Care’s strategic objectives.

Kathryn Garnett

LLB Law, LPC Law (Vice Chair)

Kathryn started her career as a lawyer practising in social services litigation, but before long moved to work with a charity which specialises in sending medical aid to Malawi. Kathryn has travelled regularly to Africa from childhood and her interests and passions lie in helping with the medical poverty which is widespread there. Kathryn has been a trustee and manager of several medical aid charities for over twenty years. She has been a trustee and volunteer at Inter Care since 2016 and provides valuable insight into the challenges of providing medical aid to African countries and guidance and support to the board on legal and governance matters.

Carol Austin

Carol trained as a haematology technician and worked at the Leicester General and Royal hospitals until leaving in 1979 to start a family. She met David Rosenberg, the founder of Inter Care, in 1992 and became interested in the aims of the charity and joined as a volunteer, becoming a member of staff in early 1993. Carol worked as a Resource Manager being in control of the procurement of and distribution of medicines to health units in Africa for Inter Care until her retirement in 2014. Carol became a member of the board of trustees in June 2015. During her time with Inter Care, Carol has travelled extensively in Africa, visiting and monitoring many of the health units supported by the Charity.

Dr Jean Widdowson

BPharm, PhD, MRPharmS

Jean has been a Trustee since 2008. Experience in Pharmacy and Medical Microbiology enables her to play a vital part in ensuring the quality of our medical supplies. In her additional role as Responsible Person, she has since 2013, helped Inter Care to retain a Wholesalers Dealers License (WDA[H]), by ensuring that medicines are procured, handled, and distributed according to Good Distribution Practice. Jean is acutely aware that our aid must be fit for purpose, and has travelled in Africa, constantly updating her knowledge of national public health strategies and assessment of the needs and level of expertise at the health units. She strongly believes that Inter Care’s sustainability lies in our close links with our African partners and our ability to adapt to their changing needs, without compromising their self-sufficiency.

Dr David Baugh

David spent most of his working life as a general practitioner in Banbury Oxfordshire but before that he was a doctor with the Zambia Flying Doctor Service working in very rural Zambia, hence began his love affair with Africa. His twin sons were born in Zambia. He took a three-month sabbatical towards the end of his GP career to work at a cancer hospice in northern Kenya following which he worked for the Catholic Relief Society in Zambia teaching palliative care in a mission hospital setting. He has been a trustee of and volunteer at Inter Care for 5 years and brings knowledge of medical need and delivery in an African setting.

Verna Webber

B.Sc. in Pharmacology and Physiology.

Verna spent her working life within the Pharmaceutical Industry initially in wholesale distribution and then in Sales and Management. She joined Inter Care as a Trustee well over 20 years ago and during that time she has been able to visit many of the health units that Inter Care supports across North and South Malawi, Ghana and throughout Tanzania, which has really helped develop a great understanding of the many needs across the hospitals and clinics that Inter Care supports. As access to medicines and healthcare goods continue to be a challenge and the distribution of such, Verna gives her guidance and support.

Bob Bailey

M.Sc., C.Eng.

Bob started his career in the electricity supply industry and later the steel industry before moving into environmental management consultancy in the mid-1980s. He has been Managing Director of several consultancy companies covering projects across Europe, USA, Africa, and South America. He has strong personal links with families in Tanzania and South Africa. Bob has been a Trustee of Inter Care for over 15 years and provides assistance to the Board in environmental issues and general business-related matters.
